Desk calendar alongside a notebook, calculator and financial study materials for planning R06 exam preparation

If you are planning to sit R06 Financial Planning Practice in 2027, the CII has confirmed four exam dates: 19 January, 20 April, 6 July and 5 October. Put your chosen sitting, booking deadline and results date in your diary before setting your revision timetable.

This is a new guide to the 2027 calendar. Our R06 important dates for 2026 remains available for candidates looking back at that year's timetable.

Published and checked against the CII timetable on 13 October 2026. The dates below come from the CII's official important exam deadlines page. Check that page again before booking, as arrangements can change.

Confirmed R06 exam dates for 2027

    The four sittings are:

    • Tuesday 19 January 2027
    • Tuesday 20 April 2027
    • Tuesday 6 July 2027
    • Tuesday 5 October 2027

The summer sitting falls in July, rather than June as it did in 2026. If you are carrying forward an old study plan, check that you have used the right date.

R06 is a three-hour written exam based on two case studies. Your preparation needs to include applying financial planning knowledge to the clients, rather than simply recalling facts. Our R06 exam guide explains the assessment, and our guide to the R06 case study format looks at how to approach the paper.

    R06 booking deadlines in 2027

The CII lists the following closing dates for exam bookings:

    Exam sittingBooking closes
    Tuesday 19 January 2027Monday 4 January 2027
    Tuesday 20 April 2027Monday 5 April 2027
    Tuesday 6 July 2027Monday 21 June 2027
    Tuesday 5 October 2027Monday 20 September 2027

Booking opening dates are still marked TBC by the CII. There is no confirmed opening date to give you yet. Do not assume that the 2026 opening arrangements will apply to 2027.

Bookings are made through your MyCII dashboard. Once booking becomes available, check that your preferred sitting and delivery option have places before building your plans around them. The closing date is a deadline, not a guarantee of availability.

For the January sitting, the booking deadline is shortly after New Year. It is worth dealing with your booking before the Christmas break rather than leaving it until you return to work.

When are R06 results released in 2027?

The CII has confirmed these results dates:

    Exam sittingResults released
    Tuesday 19 January 2027Friday 26 February 2027
    Tuesday 20 April 2027Friday 28 May 2027
    Tuesday 6 July 2027Friday 13 August 2027
    Tuesday 5 October 2027Friday 12 November 2027

Results are therefore scheduled just over five weeks after each sitting. You will need to log in to the CII website to access them. The deadlines page gives the dates above but does not state a release time, so check the CII's results guidance for that detail.

If you are planning around an employer deadline or the completion of your Diploma in Regulated Financial Planning, use the results date, not just the exam date. Sitting the paper and receiving your result are two different milestones.

When will the 2027 R06 case studies be available?

R06 case studies are normally released around two weeks before the exam. However, the CII deadlines page does not list exact case study release dates for the 2027 sittings. We have not presented calculated dates as confirmed release dates.

Keep the final fortnight before your chosen sitting as clear as you reasonably can. Check the CII's case study information and your candidate communications for the actual release arrangements.

Once the case studies are available, read them carefully before trying to predict questions. For each client, note:

    • Their objectives and the order in which they need to be addressed.
    • Income, expenditure, assets, debts and existing arrangements.
    • Dependants, health, employment and family circumstances.
    • Missing information you would need before giving advice.
    • Tax, pensions, investment and protection issues raised by the facts.

Then practise writing answers that refer to those clients. A technically correct answer can still be too general if it does not explain why the point matters in their circumstances. Our R06 examiner report lessons covers recurring exam technique issues.

A practical revision timetable for your 2027 sitting

Before the case studies are released

Start with the areas you find hardest across R01 to R05, then practise written financial planning questions. Work on identifying what the question asks: additional information, an explanation, a recommendation and a review question each call for a different type of answer.

Use timed practice to get used to producing separate, relevant points. Review your answers afterwards and distinguish gaps in knowledge from points you knew but did not state clearly.

You can find R06 mock exam practice on R0 Hub, alongside explanations and feedback to help you review your work.

    During the final fortnight

Move your focus to the released case studies. Build a short summary of each client's position, revise the technical areas their circumstances raise and practise applying your knowledge to them.

Do not rely on memorising a predicted paper. The case studies give you the facts, not the exact questions the CII will ask.

    Before exam day

Read your joining instructions and check your own start time, delivery arrangements and identification requirements. If you are sitting remotely, complete the required equipment checks in good time. Do not treat a general timetable as a substitute for your personal instructions.

    The key dates to save

For 2027, the R06 exam dates are 19 January, 20 April, 6 July and 5 October. Booking closes on 4 January, 5 April, 21 June and 20 September, respectively. Results are scheduled for 26 February, 28 May, 13 August and 12 November.

Booking opening dates remain TBC, and exact case study release dates are not provided on the CII deadlines page. Keep the official CII timetable bookmarked and check it before making a booking.
